State Park Poster

For this Project we had to research a State Park from a state that we chose, I chose Alaska. Your parks design had to be a combination mark for each of the three parks, making each design as large as you can to fit within a 6" x 6" area. Create a logo with one or two spot color plus black, and all three logos had to be designed so they look like a set, with similar stylizations, theme and layout. In-class discussions we focused on the pros and cons of gradients and special effects for logos. All artwork was produced in Illustrator. We had to produce a poster that promotes one of the state parks and were required to research travel posters from the 20s and 30s to use as style guides in the creation of the imagery within the poster, which was drawn in Illustrator. The format of the poster is 15" x 20", full color CMYK. The type required was a headline that promotes the park to the intended target audience, the name of the state park, and one or two paragraphs that describe the park and will make people want to come to the park.

I researched historical travel posters and I started to see a style trend and and the color concepts that appeared to repeat everywhere, so I used those to inspire me. We had to create a visual promotion that communicates effectively over a distance, making us consider shape, color, value, contrast, typography and visual hierarchies. So it made me super excited to do Denali because it is such a massive Mountain that I knew the exact view I wanted to recreate and allowing the view to capture the readers attention and hook them into the colorful field of fireweed and the silhouetted people, saying that can be you in their shoes pointing up at the mountain. The logo contrasts against the flowers beautifully, with the bold white letters still able to read.

I wanted to use Alaska’s state flag colors, which is gold and dark blue. I then used every popular animal in that area to use as the subject and the most popular mountain range at that park in the background. Contrasting against the orange/gold background sky.
