Environmental Issue 8-page Booklet

Objective

The first page had to have one photograph and a one word headline that visually and dynamically expresses the environmental issue. In addition, the name of the environmental issue has to be on the cover, and the subhead must be subordinate, the one word headline dominant. In addition a diecut of some kind that expresses the theme of the booklet must be included on the first page. The inside pages were designed using stories about the topic (Shark Finning) and each page must have a minimum of 200 words per story, and the stories must be linked together from page to page using threaded text. Each inside page must also have a headline and at least two subheads, along with two scanned pictures/images that must have a minimum resolution of 150 dpi at 100% size, no internet images are allowed unless they are pictures downloaded that meet the minimum resolution requirement. Any of the two images can cross-over on to the other page of the spread if you choose.

Solution

I decided to go for a very straight forward approach and play on the emotions, showing bloody shark fins hanging on hooks drying in the sun. I used the color red as the main color of this booklet to highlight the importance of this topic and grab the readers attention from a distance away. My teacher said he wanted to see the topic that is the issue, so I found the most disturbing photos I could find and put those on the front because I think the disgust and sadness of the truth of shark finning should make you feel gross, and sad and angry. I wanted to play with the mass scale of shark finning and use that in the layout.
